Hail Storm Preparation- 3 Things To Do BEFORE It Hits
Hail Storm Preparation- What to Do BEFORE It Hits
If hail storm preparation isn’t on your mind, it should be. Nebraska is among 10 states that have the highest risk of hail and our chances are high as we straddle between Spring and Summer. The good news? There are things you can do leading up to a hail storm to minimize damage to your property and keep your family safe.
Here are 3 Things You Can Do for Hail Storm Preparation:
1. Check Your Insurance Policy
We know, we know. We keep beating this idea over you, but it’s really important. Connect with your agent to review your policy so you understand your deductible amount along with what’s covered. A “typical” insurance policy will cover wind and hail damage which covers the roof, siding, windows, and other exterior property.
Unsure of how to choose an agent or policy? We wrote this guide called Choosing the Right Insurance Company (5 Questions to Ask)
And whatever you do, make sure you know WHO your insurance company is.
2. Secure Things Outside
Patio furniture and grills should be moved inside the garage if there is the space. If not, find a way to fasten them down or secure them towards the house so they don’t tip over and/or fly away.
There will inevitably be things outside that you can’t bring indoors such as trampolines or play sets. As such, try to remove the parts that will fly away such as swings and the trampoline surface (if possible). We’ve all heard of those stories where trampolines fly off and end up in a neighbor’s yard- or even without a trace.
3. Avoid Having Anything Outside (Including Yourself and Pets!)
This seems a bit obvious, however, hail is no joke. We often think about “pea-sized” hail, but did you know that hail can get as large as a softball? When something that large is coming down from the sky it could be fatal. You know that outdoor pet you have, bring them in, too.
Additionally, hail can wreak havoc on cars (especially the glass) so try to have vehicles inside or under a cover.
When indoors, avoid safety near glass and cover windows with drapes, shades, or blind to avoid debris flying inside. Just like when you were a kid, hiding under a blanket is totally normal.
In conclusion, there are lots of things you can do for hail storm preparation. Watching Netflix isn’t one of them. If you have hail damage, definitely give Absolute Roofing at call at (402) 889-3381 for a FREE inspection.
